Hailing from Philadelphia, Chapell has spent her life developing a universal musical style, singing "world songs." Her repertoire includes songs in thirteen languages -- from Brazil, Latin America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East -- as well as American folk, jazz and popular music. She also has a repertoire of award-winning original songs. Chapell performs in concert as a solo artist accompanying herself on guitar, and with her ensemble Phyllis Chapell & SIORA, as well as with Intercultural Journeys (led by Philadelphia Orchestra cellist Udi Bar-David), with the Ken Ulansey Whirled Music Ensembles, and a gypsy jazz ensemble called the Hot Club of Philadelphia, playing throughout the United States, Latin America, Brazil, and Europe. She has been named one of the top 500 jazz vocalists of all time by Scott Yanow (Downbeat, JazzTimes, AllMusicGuide.com) and has recorded six CDs. Chapell is currently working on a series of six videos with Emmy award-winning composer/producer/filmmaker (and Spare A Dime Production Coordinator) Rodney Whittenberg.
